Why Amsterdam

Amsterdam gives a school group a compact, low-rise city where daily physical activity is built into the fabric of the place — most residents cycle, and the canal ring can be crossed on foot in under an hour. For Sport and PE cohorts travelling from Dubai, it offers a rare chance to study a city designed around human movement rather than the car, alongside elite venues such as the Johan Cruijff ArenA and the 1928 Olympic Stadium.

The Johan Cruijff ArenA in Zuidoost runs behind-the-scenes tours taking in the dressing rooms, players' tunnel and pitch, and sits beside the Ziggo Dome and AFAS Live in the same events district. The Olympisch Stadion in Zuid, built for the 1928 Games and still in athletics use, remains one of the few surviving Olympic stadiums of its era and is a strong site for sports-history work. Beyond sport, groups typically add the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House on Prinsengracht, with NEMO Science Museum on the eastern docklands useful for biomechanics and physiology tie-ins.

Sport & Physical Education

Students can tour the Johan Cruijff ArenA and Ajax's training culture, run or walk the track at the 1928 Olympisch Stadion, skate at the Jaap Eden IJsbaan, row or watch crews on the Bosbaan course in the Amsterdamse Bos, and audit the city's cycling infrastructure and Vondelpark as a live case study in active-travel policy.

When to travel

Amsterdam has a mild maritime climate with no extremes, but rain is possible in any month and the wind off the IJ and the North Sea makes temperatures feel lower than the thermometer suggests. Groups arriving from Dubai should expect a significant drop in temperature year-round and pack waterproof outer layers rather than umbrellas, which fare poorly in the wind.

Spring

March to May

Cool and bright with long daylight by May; strong for outdoor sessions and cycling.

Summer

June to August

Warmest and busiest; comfortable for sport but sites and canals are crowded.

Autumn

September to November

Mild early, wet and windy later; good value and quieter museums in October.

Winter

December to February

Cold, grey and short days; suits indoor venues, ice rinks and stadium tours.
