Cape Town gives students a rare combination of extraordinary landscape and unresolved recent history, set out plainly in the city's museums, townships and shoreline. For a volunteering group departing Dubai, it offers projects with genuine local partners alongside the context — District Six, Robben Island, the Cape Flats — that explains why those projects exist.
The District Six Museum in Buitenkant Street, staffed in part by former residents, records the forced removals of the 1960s and 70s through floor maps, street signs and personal testimony. A ferry from the V&A Waterfront reaches Robben Island, where ex-political prisoners guide visitors through the maximum security block and Nelson Mandela's cell, while the Iziko South African Museum and the Slave Lodge on Adderley Street cover natural history and the Cape's slave-holding past. When to travel
Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate: dry, sunny summers from November to March and cool, wet winters from June to August, with the south-easterly wind known locally as the Cape Doctor a regular summer feature. Groups arriving from Dubai will find even midsummer noticeably milder than home, and winter genuinely cold enough to need proper jackets, particularly in unheated community buildings.
