Why Rome

Rome allows students to walk through two and a half thousand years of religious history in a single afternoon, from the temples of the Roman Forum to the tomb beneath St Peter's Basilica. For a Religious Studies group, few cities offer such a concentration of living faith and physical evidence within a few square kilometres.

The Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel provide a structured study of Christian art and papal authority, while St Peter's Basilica and the Scavi excavations beneath it raise questions of pilgrimage, relic and tradition that students can examine directly. Beyond the Vatican, the Basilica of San Clemente reveals a twelfth-century church built over a fourth-century basilica and a Mithraic temple below that, making religious change visible in a single stairwell. The Catacombs of San Callisto on the Appian Way, the Great Synagogue and Jewish Museum in the former Ghetto, and the Pantheon's conversion from Roman temple to church all extend the study well beyond a single tradition.

Religious

St Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, San Clemente's three-layered excavation, the Catacombs of San Callisto and the Great Synagogue in the Ghetto let students trace Roman, Jewish and Christian practice in the places where it happened.

When to travel

Rome has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, damp winters, and groups arriving from Dubai will find spring and autumn noticeably cooler than home. July and August bring sustained heat with little shade in the Forum or St Peter's Square, so pacing and water stops matter.

Spring

March to May

Mild and bright, ideal for walking itineraries; Easter week brings heavy Vatican crowds.

Summer

June to August

Hot and dry with strong sun in open sites; early starts and long midday breaks are essential.

Autumn

September to November

Warm through September, wetter by November; among the best periods for school groups.

Winter

December to February

Cool and often rainy but quiet at major sites; layers and waterproofs needed.
