Uganda offers school groups a rare combination of genuine community partnership work and some of East Africa's most remarkable landscapes, from the shores of Lake Victoria to the forested slopes of Bwindi. Placements in and around Kampala, Jinja and the Mpigi district typically involve school refurbishment, teaching support and work with community organisations such as local primary schools and youth centres, with students briefed on ethical volunteering before departure.
When to travel
Sitting on the equator but more than 1,100 metres above sea level, Kampala stays mild year-round, averaging around 21.8°C with warm days and comfortably cool evenings. Rain arrives in two wet seasons and usually falls as heavy afternoon showers rather than all-day drizzle, so project work continues with only minor interruption.
