Why Seoul

Seoul offers school groups a rare compression of five centuries of Joseon court architecture and one of the most influential contemporary design cultures in Asia, often within a few metro stops of each other. For students from Dubai it is a manageable flight with no significant time-zone disruption, and a city where creative industries — animation, fashion, product design, K-pop visual culture — are visible in the streetscape rather than hidden in studios.

The National Museum of Korea in Yongsan and the Leeum Museum of Art in Hannam-dong give students a spine of historical and contemporary collections, while the MMCA Seoul branch sits directly beside Gyeongbokgung Palace, making the shift from Joseon craft to present-day installation a short walk rather than a bus journey. Zaha Hadid's Dongdaemun Design Plaza hosts rotating design exhibitions and Seoul Fashion Week, and the surrounding fabric markets let students source materials for their own work. Insadong's paper and brush shops, the hanok lanes of Bukchon, and the gallery cluster in Samcheong-dong support sketchbook work and studio visits across a single day.

Art & Design

Students can compare the celadon and buncheong ceramics at the National Museum of Korea with the parametric architecture of the Dongdaemun Design Plaza, then work from observation in Bukchon Hanok Village or take a hanji papermaking or ceramics workshop in Insadong.

When to travel

Seoul has a sharply defined four-season climate, with humid summers, a concentrated monsoon period in July, and genuinely cold, dry winters when temperatures sit below freezing — a considerable change for groups travelling from Dubai. Spring and autumn are dry, clear and comfortable for long walking days, and are when most school itineraries are scheduled.

Spring

March to May

Mild, cherry blossom along the Han River; excellent for outdoor sketching days.

Summer

June to August

Hot, humid and monsoon rain in July; indoor museum days need careful planning.

Autumn

September to November

Clear skies, cool air and autumn colour; the strongest season for school groups.

Winter

December to February

Cold and dry, often below freezing; workable but proper coats are essential.
