Hiroshima gives students a city that has rebuilt itself deliberately, from the preserved ruin of the Genbaku Dome to the wide axial planning of Kenzō Tange's Peace Memorial Park. It is also a working manufacturing city — home to Mazda's main plant and to craft towns such as Kumano and Miyajima — which makes it unusually rich for design and technology groups travelling from Dubai.
The core of any visit is the Peace Memorial Museum, the A-Bomb Dome and the Children's Peace Monument, where the story of reconstruction is told through objects, testimony and architecture rather than abstraction. Beyond the park, groups visit the Mazda Museum in Fuchū to walk alongside a live assembly line, the Yamato Museum in nearby Kure for naval engineering and shipbuilding, and Kumano Fude no Sato Kōbō, where the town's brush-making trade is demonstrated and taught. Hiroshima Castle, Shukkeien garden and the ferry crossing to Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima add historical and cultural depth within easy reach of the centre.

When to travel
Hiroshima has a humid subtropical climate: hot, sticky summers, a distinct rainy season in June and early July, and mild winters with only occasional snow in the city itself. Sheltered by the Chūgoku mountains and open to the Seto Inland Sea, it is generally sunnier than much of the Sea of Japan coast, though late-summer typhoons can disrupt ferry sailings to Miyajima.
