Why Belgium

Belgium packs an unusual concentration of scientific institutions, engineering landmarks and medieval cities into a country small enough to cross by train in under two hours. For school groups, it offers a rare combination: laboratory-grade science venues in Brussels and Leuven alongside cobbled squares and canal towns that make the history of European trade tangible.

Students can stand inside the Atomium's stainless-steel spheres, a 1958 model of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times, and study particle physics and space science at the Euro Space Center in Transinne, where astronaut-training simulators are used for structured student programmes. The Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels holds Europe's largest dinosaur gallery, including the Bernissart Iguanodon skeletons excavated from a coal mine in 1878 — original specimens rather than casts. Few countries let a group examine genuine Cretaceous fossils in the morning and tour a working hadron-therapy or brewing-science facility in the afternoon.

Science

The Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, the Atomium's crystal-lattice architecture, the Euro Space Center at Transinne and the Africa Museum's biodiversity collections at Tervuren together cover palaeontology, materials science, space physics and ecology.

When to travel

Belgium has a mild maritime climate averaging around 12°C in Brussels, with rain possible in any month and few extremes of heat or cold. Groups arriving from Dubai should expect grey skies and drizzle as a normal condition rather than a disruption, and pack waterproof layers accordingly.

Spring

March to May

Cool and showery, warming steadily; museums quiet and a strong choice for school groups.

Summer

June to August

Mildest and driest, around 22°C; busiest at major sites but excellent for walking days.

Autumn

September to November

Wet and cooling, atmospheric old towns; September suits trips particularly well.

Winter

December to February

Cold, damp, dark by mid-afternoon; indoor science venues work, outdoor time limited.
