Salalah sits on the Dhofar coast where the Indian Ocean monsoon reaches Arabia, giving Oman's second city a landscape of green escarpments, spring-fed wadis and frankincense country found nowhere else on the peninsula. It is roughly a two-hour flight from Dubai, which makes it one of the few genuinely remote-feeling outdoor education settings a school can reach without a long-haul journey.
The Dhofar mountains behind the city — Jebel Qara and Jebel Samhan — give groups a compact range of terrain: the waterfalls and travertine terraces of Wadi Darbat, the sinkhole at Tawi Atair, the sea cliffs and blowholes at Al Mughsayl, and the sheltered khors along the coast. Al Baleed Archaeological Park and its Museum of the Frankincense Land anchor the human side of the landscape, showing how a monsoon coast supported a maritime trading port, while Wadi Dawkah's frankincense groves and the ruins of Sumhuram above Khor Rori explain why. Taqah Castle and the fishing town of Mirbat give students a sense of settlement patterns along the Dhofar shoreline.

Groups can build navigation, expedition and risk-assessment skills across genuinely varied ground — the escarpment trails above Wadi Darbat, the karst sinkhole at Tawi Atair, coastal work at Al Mughsayl and Khor Rori, and camel-grazed plateau country on Jebel Samhan.
When to travel
Salalah is the only part of Arabia touched by the southwest monsoon, so its year splits sharply between a hot dry majority and the cool, misty khareef of high summer. Outside khareef the coast is warm and reliably dry, with sea breezes taking the edge off the heat and mountain temperatures a few degrees cooler than the plain.

Summer
June to SeptemberKhareef monsoon: cool, misty, green hills and drizzle. Wet underfoot but very walkable.
