Uganda - Community, Conservation & Cultural Heritage

Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your group leader before transferring to Mukono, a lively town surrounded by Uganda’s beautiful green countryside. After checking into your accommodation, there will be time to settle in, unpack and recover from your journey.

In the evening, join the local team and your fellow participants for a welcome dinner. An informative orientation will introduce you to the programme, the local community, Ugandan culture and the important work you will be undertaking over the coming days. This is also an opportunity to ask questions, meet the people supporting your project and prepare for the rewarding experience ahead.

Over the next three days, you will work alongside local community members, builders and project coordinators on a practical development initiative designed to improve facilities within the Mukono area. Depending on the community’s priorities at the time of your visit, the project may involve supporting the construction or improvement of classrooms, community resource centres, sanitation facilities or access to clean water.

Your first project morning will begin with a detailed introduction covering the purpose of the work, daily responsibilities and essential safety guidance. You may then help with tasks such as preparing the site, moving materials, mixing cement, painting, landscaping, decorating or improving existing community spaces. Activities will be allocated according to the project’s progress, local requirements and the age and abilities of participants.

Working as part of a team will give you the opportunity to communicate with local people, develop practical skills and see how collective effort can create meaningful improvements. The experience encourages responsibility, resilience, cooperation and problem-solving while helping students appreciate the challenges faced by communities with limited resources.

Breakfast will generally be served between 7:00 am and 9:00 am. Project activities will take place during the morning, followed by a lunch break and a further afternoon work session. The programme will remain flexible to accommodate weather conditions, project requirements and the guidance of the local team.

After each productive day, enjoy time to relax and socialise through sports, card games, board games and cultural activities. These informal evenings provide a valuable opportunity to build friendships, reflect on the day’s achievements and learn more about everyday life in Uganda before returning to the accommodation for dinner.

Discovering Kampala’s History and Culture

After several rewarding days of community work, today brings a change of pace with a guided exploration of Kampala, Uganda’s energetic and colourful capital. The city combines traditional kingdoms, religious landmarks, busy neighbourhoods and important reminders of the country’s complex history.

Your tour will include the impressive Gaddafi National Mosque, where the minaret offers far-reaching views across Kampala’s famous hills. Continue to the historic Buganda Kingdom palace and learn about the traditions and influence of one of Uganda’s most important cultural institutions.

You will also visit the Kasubi Tombs, an important spiritual site associated with the kings of Buganda, and the Uganda Museum, where displays introduce the country’s archaeology, musical heritage and diverse communities. Throughout the day, your guide will help bring Kampala’s past and present to life while you experience the atmosphere of one of East Africa’s most dynamic cities.

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Today you will travel across Lake Victoria to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary for an unforgettable wildlife and conservation experience. The boat journey offers wonderful views across Africa’s largest lake before you arrive at the island sanctuary, which provides a safe home for rescued and orphaned chimpanzees that cannot return to the wild.

During your visit, learn about chimpanzee behaviour, habitat protection and the threats facing primates, including habitat loss and illegal wildlife trafficking. From a designated viewing area, you may observe the chimpanzees during a scheduled feeding session while sanctuary staff explain their individual personalities, social groups and rehabilitation stories.

This memorable excursion provides much more than a close encounter with remarkable wildlife. It introduces students to the importance of responsible conservation and demonstrates how education, scientific research and community involvement can work together to protect endangered species.

After breakfast, it will be time to check out of your accommodation and say goodbye to the local team and the people who have supported you throughout the programme. The journey back to Entebbe offers an opportunity to reflect on everything you have experienced—from contributing to a community project and developing new practical skills to exploring Kampala and discovering Uganda’s extraordinary wildlife.

You will then transfer to Entebbe International Airport for your return flight, departing with new friendships, greater cultural understanding and lasting memories of a journey that combined service, discovery and adventure.
