Overview

About this trip

Berlin is the seat of German government — the Chancellery, the Bundestag in the renovated Reichstag building, the Bundesrat in the former Prussian House of Lords, and nearly every federal ministry. For politics students, the whole constitutional machinery of Europe's largest democracy is on display in one city.

This itinerary pairs living institutions with the city's political past: the DDR Museum, the Bundestag dome, the Stasi prison at Hohenschönhausen, the Europa Experience, the Brandenburg Gate and UNESCO-listed Museum Island.

Cultural awareness

Customs & norms in Germany

A little cultural fluency goes a long way — these are the habits your hosts will notice and appreciate.

  • Punctuality is a courtesy — be on time for everything.
  • Wait for the green figure before crossing the road, even with no traffic in sight.
  • Sundays are quiet: most shops close and noise is kept low.
