Your first visit will be to the Temple of Literature, founded in 1070 and home to Vietnam’s first national university. Look out for the famous stone stelae, mounted on turtle-shaped bases and inscribed with the names of successful graduates.

After enjoying breakfast at your hotel, leave the energy of Hanoi behind and travel through the beautiful countryside to Ba Vi, a peaceful region of traditional villages, tea plantations and emerald-green rice fields.

Your first stop will be Ri Village, where you will receive a warm welcome from Mr Duoc, a Vietnam War veteran and local tea farmer. Through his personal stories and memories, you will gain a fascinating insight into Vietnam’s recent history and discover how rural life has changed over the years. Accompany him to his family tea farm, where you will learn how tea is cultivated, harvested and prepared using traditional methods. You will then have the opportunity to pick fresh tea leaves while enjoying the tranquil scenery of the surrounding countryside.

Continue to Moc Village for an enjoyable, hands-on Vietnamese cooking class led by Mrs Chin. She will introduce you to local ingredients and guide you through the preparation of several authentic dishes. Afterwards, sit down together to enjoy your freshly prepared creations during a relaxed communal lunch.

In the afternoon, explore the village, meet local residents and discover the traditional crafts and customs that remain an important part of daily life. You will then set off on an exciting bicycle ride along quiet country lanes and through picturesque rice paddies, with opportunities to see local farmers at work and experience the rhythms of rural Vietnam.

Complete your countryside adventure with a soothing herbal foot bath, a traditional wellness practice associated with the Muong ethnic community. Return to Hanoi in the late afternoon, where you will have time to relax before enjoying dinner at a local restaurant and returning to your hotel for the night.

After enjoying breakfast at your hotel, meet your coach driver and depart Hanoi for the spectacular Ha Long Bay, one of Vietnam’s most celebrated natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Upon arrival at Tuan Chau Marina, board your comfortable cruise ship and begin an unforgettable journey through the bay’s emerald-green waters. Admire the dramatic scenery as you sail between thousands of towering limestone islands, hidden caves and unusual rock formations shaped by nature over millions of years.

Enjoy a delicious lunch on board while the cruise continues deeper into the bay. In the afternoon, embark on an exciting kayaking experience around Luon Cave. Paddle across calm waters, pass beneath limestone arches and explore a peaceful enclosed lagoon surrounded by steep cliffs and lush vegetation.

Continue to beautiful Titop Island, where you may relax on the sandy beach or challenge yourself with a hike to the summit. The climb is rewarded with magnificent panoramic views across Ha Long Bay, making it an ideal location for memorable photographs.

From Halong to Ho Chi Minh

Begin the day with a refreshing Tai Chi session on the sundeck as the first morning light illuminates the calm waters and limestone peaks of Ha Long Bay. This gentle traditional exercise provides a peaceful and memorable start to your final morning on the cruise.

After a light breakfast, visit Sung Sot Cave, also known as “Surprise Cave” or “Amazing Cave.” One of the largest and most impressive caves in Ha Long Bay, it features enormous chambers filled with striking stalactites, stalagmites and naturally sculpted rock formations. Follow the illuminated pathways through this remarkable underground landscape while learning how the cave developed over millions of years.

Return to the ship and enjoy a delicious brunch buffet as you cruise back through the spectacular scenery towards Tuan Chau Marina. After disembarking, meet your coach driver and transfer to Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport for your flight to Ho Chi Minh City.

During your guided visit, learn how the tunnels were constructed and how people lived and operated beneath the ground in extremely challenging conditions. Those who feel comfortable may enter a widened section of the tunnel system for a memorable first-hand experience. You will also see concealed entrances and ingenious defensive features, before sampling cassava, a simple food commonly eaten during wartime.

Return to Ho Chi Minh City and enjoy lunch at a riverside restaurant while taking in views of this energetic and rapidly developing city.

In the afternoon, discover some of Saigon’s most celebrated landmarks. See the striking Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon, constructed using materials imported from France, before visiting the magnificent Central Post Office. Designed in a grand European style, the building remains one of the city’s finest examples of French colonial architecture.

Complete your exploration at the lively Ben Thanh Market, where colourful stalls display traditional handicrafts, textiles, spices, souvenirs and local specialities. Enjoy time to practise your bargaining skills, browse for gifts and experience the sights, sounds and aromas of everyday city life. Afterwards, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant before returning to your hotel for a comfortable overnight stay.

Retracing Vietnam’s Wartime History

After breakfast, embark on a thought-provoking journey through Ho Chi Minh City, exploring locations connected to the Vietnam War and the dramatic events surrounding the fall of Saigon in April 1975.

Begin near the present-day United States Consulate, where you will learn about the former US Embassy and the 1968 Tet Offensive. Visit the memorial dedicated to the Vietnamese commandos who died during the attack on the embassy compound, providing an opportunity to reflect on the human impact of the conflict.

Continue to the former Pittman Apartments, often called the “CIA building,” whose rooftop became the setting for one of the most recognisable evacuation photographs of 1975. Although the building is normally viewed from outside, its story offers a fascinating insight into the final hours of the American evacuation.

Next, visit the Reunification Palace, formerly South Vietnam’s Presidential Palace. Explore its preserved reception rooms, offices, command centre and underground communications areas while learning about the moment North Vietnamese tanks entered the grounds on 30 April 1975, marking the collapse of the South Vietnamese government.

You will also stop at the Thich Quang Duc Monument, commemorating the Buddhist monk who self-immolated in 1963 in protest against the South Vietnamese government’s treatment of Buddhists. This powerful memorial provides important context about the political and religious tensions of the period.

Lunch will be enjoyed at Pho Binh, a modest but historically significant restaurant that secretly served as a Viet Cong command post during preparations for the Tet Offensive.
