About this trip

This seven-day programme uses the United Arab Emirates as a classroom, tracing the country's story from the trading communities of Dubai Creek and the archaeology of the desert to the cultural landmarks of Abu Dhabi, the oasis landscape of Al Ain and the mountains of Ras Al Khaimah. Learning themes include UAE history and national identity, Islamic culture and architecture, desert and mountain geography, archaeology and early settlement, sustainable cities, science and innovation, art and global cultures, traditional crafts, water management and responsible tourism.

Each day pairs guided educational visits with reflection: students examine wind-tower architecture and pearling trade, interrogate future technologies at Terra and the Museum of the Future, read desert landscapes at Mleiha, compare the symbolism of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Qasr Al Watan, study conservation at Louvre Abu Dhabi and the House of Artisans, investigate falaj irrigation at Al Ain Oasis, and analyse mountain geology at Jebel Jais. The same route can be reframed for History, Geography, Design & Technology, Art, Business, Islamic Studies, Global Perspectives, Environmental Science or Citizenship, and is suggested for students aged 11–18.

Logistically the programme is full board, with breakfast at the hotel and pre-arranged group lunches and dinners; halal, vegetarian, vegan, allergy-aware and medically required options should be confirmed before travel. A practical routing is four nights in Dubai and two nights in Abu Dhabi, with the Al Ain excursion operating from Abu Dhabi. Private air-conditioned coach transport with seat belts and licensed drivers is used throughout. All visits should be risk-assessed for the age and needs of the group, students remain under school supervision at all times, and supplier-led activities should be checked against school safeguarding and insurance requirements. Timed-entry attractions and workshops are subject to availability, and outdoor components may be adapted for extreme heat.

Day 1 of 7Dubai
From Creek to Union
Wind-tower lanes, an abra crossing and the souks of old Dubai set up the story of pearling, migration and the 1971 federation.

Dubai — From Creek to Union
Guided walk through Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, exploring wind-tower architecture and life before oil wealth. The group crosses Dubai Creek by traditional abra and explores the old trading districts and souks, learning about merchants, pearling and migration. After lunch in Old Dubai, a visit to Etihad Museum covers the leadership and negotiation behind the 1971 union. The day ends with a panoramic introduction to modern Dubai and a welcome dinner with reflection on the pace of change.

Designing the Future
Sustainability learning at Terra pairs with speculative science at the Museum of the Future, closing beneath the world's tallest tower in Downtown Dubai.

Dubai — Designing the Future
A morning at Expo City Dubai and Terra, The Sustainability Pavilion, with interactive school-focused learning on energy, water, consumption, biodiversity and sustainable architecture. After lunch at Expo City or a nearby group venue, a visit to the Museum of the Future (subject to school-group availability) prompts enquiry into science, technology, health, space and climate. The late afternoon is spent in Downtown Dubai beneath Burj Khalifa, followed by dinner in the Downtown area.

Sharjah — Culture Beneath the Sand
Islamic science, navigation and architecture in the morning; desert archaeology, burial sites and rock formations at Mleiha in the afternoon.

A guided visit to the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization or comparable heritage programme, exploring Islamic contributions to art, science, navigation and architecture, alongside observation of urban conservation. After lunch, the group travels inland to Mleiha Archaeological Centre to study finds, burial sites and geological formations, with a guided desert component reading rock formations, dunes and wadis. Return to Dubai for dinner.

The federal capital seen through its two great statements of identity: a mosque of geometry and calligraphy, and a palace of statecraft and scholarship.

Abu Dhabi — Faith, Leadership & Nationhood
Breakfast and check-out, then travel to the federal capital for a guided cultural tour of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, studying geometry, calligraphy, materials and visitor etiquette. After lunch, a visit to Qasr Al Watan explores the institutions of the UAE, scholarship, diplomacy and national development, with comparison of the architectural language of palace and mosque. The afternoon includes time on the Corniche and waterfront, followed by dinner in Abu Dhabi and an evening reflection.

A universal museum under Nouvel's shimmering dome, then Abu Dhabi's oldest fort and the artisans keeping Al Sadu weaving and palm-frond craft alive.

A morning at Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island, exploring connections between civilisations and the building's architecture, light and environmental design; the visit can be tailored to art, history, design, languages or global citizenship. After lunch, Qasr Al Hosn and the neighbouring House of Artisans focus on Emirati crafts such as Al Sadu weaving and palm-frond work, with a demonstration or hands-on workshop where available. Dinner in Abu Dhabi with discussion of cultural preservation.

Al Ain — The Oasis City
Falaj channels, date palms and desert forts reveal how settlements survived in arid Arabia, before Jebel Hafit's geology and trade routes.

Travel inland to Al Ain Oasis to study traditional falaj irrigation, date cultivation, groundwater and settlement in an arid environment. The programme continues to Al Jahili Fort or another suitable heritage site to examine the defensive and administrative role of forts. After lunch in Al Ain, the group heads towards the Jebel Hafit landscape for geology, early settlement and trade, with viewpoints contrasting oasis, desert plain and mountain. Return to Dubai for dinner.

A hilltop fort reveals how water and terrain shaped settlement, before the Hajar Mountains offer a lesson in rock, erosion and habitat.

Ras Al Khaimah — Mountains, Forts & Farewell
Travel north to Dhayah Fort, whose hilltop setting illustrates the link between geography and defence, with discussion of water, fertile land and settlement patterns. After lunch, the group takes in Hajar Mountain scenery at Jebel Jais and, subject to weather, age and risk assessment, joins a guided low-intensity nature or geology walk examining rock, elevation, erosion and habitats. Return to Dubai for a farewell dinner and guided reflection, which may include student presentations or a travel journal activity.
